Managing E-Waste in India: Recycling, Refurbishing, and Awareness

Introduction

E-waste, or electronic waste, is a growing environmental concern in India. With increasing gadget usage, proper disposal and recycling are crucial. The government has taken steps to manage e-waste efficiently and spread awareness.

Government Initiatives

Key policies for e-waste management include:

  • E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016 – Introduced Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for manufacturers to ensure proper recycling.

  • E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 – Focuses on digitizing the process and restricting hazardous substances.

  • Increased Recycling – E-waste recycling in India grew from 23,330 tonnes in 2016-17 to 527,000 tonnes in 2021-22.

Awareness and Innovative Recycling

The E-Waste Awareness Program under Digital India educates citizens through workshops and social media, reaching over 1.23 lakh people. Additionally, in Kenchanahalli, Karnataka, refurbished EV batteries are used for backup power, promoting sustainability.

Conclusion

India is making progress in e-waste management through regulations and awareness. However, individual responsibility is key. Dispose of old electronics through authorized recyclers and spread awareness for a greener future.
